From the perspective of industrial upgrading, this study examines the impact of the digital economy on physical retail efficiency. Theoretical analysis and empirical testing indicate that digital economy development significantly enhances retail efficiency through four pathways—precise market analysis, intelligent supply chain management, personalized customer experience, and business model innovation—with industrial upgrading serving as a key mediator. Heterogeneity analysis reveals marked differences in benefits across retail subsectors. Corresponding policy recommendations are proposed to inform the digital transformation of the physical retail industry.
